A calm, $100-a-month plan that quietly tilts toward AI.
Two scenarios. Three core ETF sleeves. One optional stock watchlist for later.
Designed to be boring on the outside and compounding on the inside — works on
Robinhood, E*TRADE, Fidelity, Schwab, or any broker that supports fractional shares.

01 · Scenarios
Pick the scenario that matches where you are right now.
If you don't yet have a 3-6 month emergency fund, build that first — investing on top
of an unstable base usually gets sold at the worst time. Once cash reserves are in place,
shift to the full-invest scenario.
Scenario A
Emergency-first split
Half of the contribution shores up cash reserves. The remainder still gets invested so you stay in the market while you build the buffer.

Core ETF VTI · SPLG · VOO$35.00

Semiconductor ETF SMH · SOXX$5.00
Scenario B
Full $100 invested
You already have a 3-6 month emergency fund. Every dollar is now compounding — broad market core, with a deliberate AI / semis tilt.

02 · ETF allocation
Three sleeves, picked from low-cost, liquid index funds.
The tickers below are examples, not endorsements — pick one ETF per sleeve and
stick with it. Mixing two core funds (e.g. VTI and VOO) just adds tracking
noise without diversification.
Sleeve 01Core
Broad-market core
The foundation. Total US market or S&P 500 exposure — the engine the rest of the plan rides on top of.

Thematic AI / robotics swap
If you want a more explicit AI label on the tech sleeve, you can substitute (not stack) one of these for QQQM/VGT/FTEC. They concentrate harder, have higher fees, and historically lag the broader tech index — so treat them as a flavor choice, not an upgrade.

03 · Monthly schedule
One day a month. Three buys. Done.
Set a recurring transfer the day after payday and a recurring buy the morning after.
The whole point is that the schedule does the thinking, not you.
Day 1
Auto-transfer $100
Move $100 from checking → brokerage cash. Schedule for the day after payday so it leaves before you can spend it.
Day 2
Auto-buy three sleeves
Recurring buy: $60 core, $25 tech/AI, $15 semis (or the emergency-first split). Use fractional shares — exact dollars, no leftover cash.
Day 3-30
Ignore it
Don't check it. The plan is built for boredom. If you feel the urge to tinker, re-read the disclaimer.
Quarterly
Glance, don't fiddle
Once a quarter, check that allocations haven't drifted more than ~5 points. Rebalance with the next month's contribution rather than selling.
04 · Projections
Hypothetical balances — assumptions you can change.
These are illustrative, not forecasts. Compounding math applied to fixed
monthly contributions at the rates below. Markets don't return a smooth number every
year — actual results will look bumpier and almost certainly different. Edit any
assumption to see the table recalculate.
Assumptions
%
Conservative cash sleeve only.
%
Below long-run equity average.
%
Roughly real-return average for US equities.
%
Nominal long-run S&P 500 average.
Scenario B · Full $100 invested
$100 / month · invested portion compounds at the rates below

How the numbers are computed
For each year, the invested portion is grown with the standard
future-value-of-an-annuity formula, compounded monthly. The cash sleeve
(Scenario A only) uses the same formula at the emergency-yield rate. The two are
summed for total balance. Inflation is not applied — these are
nominal dollars.
No fees, taxes, dividend re-investment quirks, or sequence-of-returns risk are
modelled. Real outcomes will deviate; this is education, not a forecast.
// Future value of monthly contributions, compounded monthlyFV(PMT, r, years) {
const i = r / 12;
const n = years * 12;
returnPMT * ((1+i)**n - 1) / i;
}
// Scenario A — split contribution
balance = FV($50, r_cash, t) + FV($50, r_inv, t);
// Scenario B — full invested
balance = FV($100, r_inv, t);
05 · Watchlist sleeve
Individual stocks — for later, not month one.
Once the ETF habit is automatic and you're contributing comfortably, you can carve a
small satellite sleeve (5-10% of contributions) for individual names.
Until then, this is a watchlist — research, not buys.
AVGOSemiconductors
Broadcom
Custom AI silicon for hyperscalers (Google TPUs, others) plus VMware. Cash-flow heavy, dividend-paying, AI-adjacent without being Nvidia-priced.
TSMFoundry
Taiwan Semiconductor
The fab everyone in the AI stack — Nvidia, AMD, Apple, Broadcom — depends on. Geopolitical risk is the entire bear case.
GOOGLMega-cap tech
Alphabet
Search, YouTube, Cloud, Gemini, Waymo, custom TPUs. Owns its own AI stack end-to-end. Cheapest mag-7 by most multiples.
METAMega-cap tech
Meta Platforms
Llama models, Reality Labs, ad business funding the AI capex. Heaviest spender on AI infrastructure relative to revenue.
NFLXMedia
Netflix
Streaming incumbent, ad tier scaling, password-sharing crackdown matured. Less an AI bet, more a quality-compounder ballast.
DISMedia
Disney
Parks cashflow + streaming turnaround + IP library. A reversion-and-IP-moat story rather than an AI story. Adds non-correlated flavor.
Before any single name enters the plan, ask: does this add something my ETF sleeves
don't already cover? If AVGO, TSM, GOOGL, and META are already top-10 holdings of
QQQM and SMH (they are), buying them individually mostly amplifies risk, not return.
06 · Platforms
Set it up the same way on Robinhood or E*TRADE.
Both brokers are commission-free for stocks and ETFs. The differences that matter for
this plan are recurring buys, fractional coverage, and how easy it is to leave the
plan alone after setup.
Robinhood
Mobile-first
Link bank. Add your checking account in Settings → Transfers.
Recurring deposit. Schedule $100/mo the day after payday.
Recurring buys. For each ETF, tap the ticker → Recurring → set the dollar amount and the day. Fractional shares are on by default.
Optional brokerage cash sweep. Idle cash earns interest while waiting to deploy.
Turn off notifications. Daily P&L pings are the enemy of long-term investing.
E*TRADE
Full-service
Open / fund. Brokerage account, link bank, schedule the $100 transfer.
Automatic Investing. Use the dedicated Automatic Investing tool — this is what enables fractional ETF purchases. Outside of it, ETFs trade in whole shares.
Add three sleeves. Configure each ETF as a separate auto-investment with its dollar amount and monthly cadence.
Confirm fractional eligibility. Not every ETF is supported under Automatic Investing — verify each ticker before relying on it.
Use mobile app sparingly. Charts and screeners are good. Don't let them rebrief your plan every week.
Educational, not advice
This page is a worked example for personal finance education. It is not personalized
investment advice, a recommendation to buy or sell any security, or a solicitation.
All projections are hypothetical — they assume smooth, constant
annual returns that markets do not actually deliver. Past performance does not
guarantee future results; concentrated tech and semiconductor exposure can lose value
rapidly. Tax treatment, account types (taxable vs. IRA vs. Roth IRA), and platform
features change — verify current rules with the broker and, if it matters, a licensed
advisor or tax professional. Tickers listed are illustrative; the author has no
position in or relationship with any of the issuers mentioned.
